Writing to Editors

Keep It Brief

Express your ideas as clearly and briefly as possible. Use short words, short sentences, and short paragraphs. Do not exceed 200 words.

State your point, then back it up with factual information.

Be sure all information is useful to this one topic. Use information that the entire audience will recognize as authoritative.

Make it a timely subject.

Write about issues that are currently in the news. Focus just on that issue and write with poise and conviction.

Write professionally.

Type the letter, double-spaced. Sign your name and give your address and phone number because many editors will not print letters without knowing the source of the letter.
